How Manhattan Blepharoplasty Surgery Works

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the surgical procedures that is growing most rapidly in popularity thanks to its ability to take a number of years off the appearance of the patient. Since the under the eye area is one that can begin to sag, show age lines, and lose elasticity even at a relatively early age, many patients in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond find that it is an excellent way to turn back the clock. The eyelid surgery is normally performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases only local anesthesia is needed and the patient can have the surgery as an out patient procedure.

Once a patient has been put under anesthesia, the surgeon will begin with a single or series of small incisions in either the upper lid or the lower lid. In the case of an upper lid Manhattan blepharoplasty, the doctor makes the incision alongside the area of the upper eyelid where the skin creases naturally. Any additional skin is taken out and some excess fatty tissue might be repositioned for an improved look. In the case of a lower lid Manhattan blepharoplasty, the incision follows the lash line on the lower eyelid and extends to the very edge of the lower lid. As with the upper lid surgery, any extra fat or skin can be taken out. Another face lift technique that is sometimes used for a lower lid blepharoplasty is the transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The incision in this type of surgery is made inside the lower eyelid. Skin cannot be taken out in this method, but fat can be taken out this way.

The type of eyelid surgery performed depends on the needs of the patient as well as their suitability for a particular type of surgery. In the case of a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, the surgery is best done in younger people with excellent skin elasticity since this procedure can only truly correct an excess of fat, but if there is extra sagging skin due to loss of elasticity, it cannot be corrected in this manner. If the primary aim of the surgery is to approve the appearance of sagging under eye skin, an upper lid procedure or a full lower lid procedure must be performed.
